So the garage we walk into changes from street to street. Some run extension springs beside the tracks, which need a containment cable through each spring; others hang on a torsion shaft over the header. We look first, then price the job.

The whole door, from springs to opener, and here that includes the seal line, because this side of the valley has burned often. CAL FIRE records the 2019 Tick Fire starting at Tick Canyon Rd and Summit Knoll Rd; it burned 4,615 acres and destroyed 22 structures. Three years before, the Sand Fire began near the 14 Freeway and Sand Canyon Rd, and its mapped edge covers about 16% of the City land in 91387. Parts of Canyon Country are mapped Very High fire hazard on the County's layer. Where they are, new door work must keep the gap at the bottom, sides and top to 1/8 inch, so we look up the address before we order anything.

Yes, close by. The USGS catalog puts the magnitude 6.6 San Fernando main shock of February 9, 1971 in the hills east of Sand Canyon, inside the 91387 ZIP area and about 2.4 km outside today's City line. The worst damage that day fell on the San Fernando Valley. Federal building guidance names a lightly braced garage front as a classic quake weak spot, worst with rooms above it. A door that runs crooked or leaves its track, whatever the cause, is covered on our track and cable repair page.
